Ciao!!!

Hello!!

We've just got back from the Inca Trail, which lasted four days and which took us slowly to Machu Picchu yesterday morning... we started out from km 82, near to Ollantaybambo in the Sacred Valley, on Friday morning, along with our guide, Lucio, and a small group made up of the two of us, Muriel, a lovely French girl, and three Poles who turned out to be rather less nice, following an ancient path of stones and steps (and a lot of them- 40-45km to Machu Picchi, via the 'Sun Door', or 'Intipunku', on the fourth day). Along the way we passed through a number of archaeological sites- ruined cities from the Inca period- as well as a cloud forest between 2500 and 3500m above sea level, to reach Warmiwañuska (Dead Woman's) Pass on the second day at 4200m, which is where Ross is in the first photo.

The second day was the hardest- only 9km but all of them up a steep series of steps, followed by two hours straight down the other side. Our campsite was very high up, and Ross's sleeping bag didn't shut properly! But we were very stoic- especially him- and on the third day we were lucky enough to have sunshine for almost the whole day, and a walk that was longer but less exhausting, over two lower mountain passes, whose names I can't remember. The camp cook had also made a cake for breakfast without using an oven! He made it in a pot and left it to cook on a camping stove, and it rose perfectly! Incredible! In fact the cook was very good and I would say that we ate better than our usual standard, and our tents and cooking materials were carried by four porters who basically did the hard work, carrying roughly 50kg each (of course we carried our backpacks, but even that was uncommon- lots of tourists even had porters to carry their personal stuff!). The porters practically ran all day long as they left after us and had to arrive before us, so that when we got to camp it was all ready.

The porters were the real heroes of the trek! On the fourth day we woke up at 3:30 am with the rain pouring down, had breakfast and set out to complete the last part of the trek. The rain showed no signs of stopping, and neither our waterproofs nor our backpack covers turned out not to be all that waterproof. We arrived at the 'Sun Door' (Puerta del Sol) about 7am, absolutely sopping wet, and the valley was so misty that you could barely see a metre in any direction (this is where you can first see Machu Picchu from on a clear day). We started the last descent towards Machu Picchu a little disappointed, trying to convince ourselves that the trek had ben the fun bit and that we could buy a postcard for the view, but as we walked down the mist began to clear and the clouds lifted one by one, until gradually Machu Picchu appeared, and it was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen! It was so majestic and mysterious, with a few traces of cloud still clinging to it, that I just sat staring at it with tears in my eyes! We were also lucky enough to have a bit of sun that dried our clothes out, and a llama that positioned itself in front of the ruins for a perfect photo! It was an incredible experience and four very intense days- we were so tired yesterday that we skipped dinner and this morning we ate our body-weight in bread. Cuzco is also full of beautiful architecture and the climate is mild. We're happy and tonight we are heading into Bolivia. Tomorrow morning we will be waking up with the shores of Lake Titikaka outside the windows!

E tra 2 giorni sara´il mio compleanno!
A presto! Adelexxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
And it's my birthday in two days' time!
See you soon! Adelexxxxxxxxx
