Arequipa (Peru) engl and ital

Hello everyone!

After our last blog we took another nice, long overnight bus journey southwards towards the city of Arequipa. We saved a bit of money on the ticket and, well, you get what you pay for- the coach smelt fairly foul and the man on the opposite side of the aisle preferred to relieve himself into a bottle rather than go to to the on-board toilet. The bus journeys here are an experience in themselves, there is generally a very high-volume accompaniment of 4 or 5 ´Andean´ pop music tracks, on a loop, hour after hour. And unfortunately it´s not so much pan pipes as a drum machine, keyboard and a female singer with an extremely piercing voice. Normally about 9pm they put a (pirated and poorly dubbed into Spanish) film on the TV, again at very high volume- the key ingredients for a popular ´bus film´ appear to be Jean-Claude Van Damme, Sylvester Stallone, Dolph Lundgren or all three, and a body count of at least 50 within the first 5 minutes. After that, especially if you´re on a ´fancy´ overnight bus, they put the air conditioning on full blast at around -35 degrees C, all night.
Ciao a tutti!!! dopo l ultimo blog abbiamo preso un altro fantastico,  lungo  , anzi lunghissimo viaggio in bus varso sud, direzione Arequipa! Muoiono tutti dopo i primi 5 minuti.

We got to Arequipa early in the morning and we liked it immediately- lots of old colonial buildings made out of off-white volcanic stone, palm trees everywhere, very hot and sunny, and with a series of snow-capped volcanoes looming over it. We also found the perfect hostel- friendly and ramshackle, but clean, in a crumbling old colonial house built around a courtyard, with a roof terrace and a kitchen. We spent a few days just wandering around the city, and visited an amazing old monastery that´s been converted into a sort of museum (it´s so big it takes up an entire city block, basically a city within a city). We also visited another monstery-museum that had slightly fewer visitors- we had to turn the lights on ourselves and blow away the dust from half the exhibits, which included Inca mummies. Apart from that we simply lolled about and enjoyed stocking up on olives, cheese and other goodies from the market, which we haven´t seen much of in 4 months...

Leaving the bulk of our stuff in the hostel we next set out on a two day trip to see a bit of the Colca Canyon, apparently the second deepest on Earth at 3km (!). The first day we travelled to the town of Cabanaconde by bus (6 hours of Andean pop), but when we arrived we were confronted by a series of semi-official looking cowboys telling us we had to buy ´tourist tickets´ to visit the canyon- which cost the equivalent of a week´s accomodation on our stingy budget! We explained our predicament to the hostel owner there, who suggested that if we got up VERY early we´d be able to slip by the check points, especially if we were only there for one day. So our descent started at the joyful hour of 5am... The canyon was indeed very deep, and quite spectacular, but unfortunately they´d filled the bottom of it with hotels and swimming pools (presumably using the money from the ´tourist tickets´!!). Following this we made another record- breaking ascent and were headed back to Arequipa by 2pm.

Tonight we have another bus to Cuzco, our last stop in Peru, where we´ll be headed to Machu Pichu- exciting!!

Love Ross (and Adele)
Baci a tutti. Adele
