MAGIC salar de Uyuni and around

Ola!!

Hello! (from Ross)

We've just finished a 3-day tour of the remote south-western corner of Bolivia, near the border with Chile.

After La Paz we went to Uyuni, a small mining town not far from Chile. After a day spent not doing a great deal there (it's a lot like the set for a cowboy film, all dusty, empty streets and blazing sunshine), we set out on the tour in a jeep, accompanied by a guide and four Colombian tourists, a bit younger than us (we weren't quite sure at first, given their questionable taste in music which they insisted on pumping out of various sound systems, but they turned out to be good company in the end, and we got to practice our Spanish, so we were happy! We also know how to recognise a Colombian now- they call each other 'Papi' about fifteen times a minute, a bit like 'mate' in London...).

On the first day we visisted a 'train cemetry' full of rusting hulks- this part of Bolivia is full of mineral ores and these trains were used to take all of it to the coast (Bolivia used to have a coast until Chile took all of it...). After that, we went to see the main attraction, which is an enormous salt flat, which was left over when a huge inland sea dried up millions of years ago. Parts of these 'salares' are partly underwater at this time of year, which turns them into gigantic mirrors, while other parts of it are dry, and blindingly white- it looks like freshly fallen snow. It's also so flat and featureless that it provides the perfect opportunity to play around with your camera, because it's hard to judge depth- see below! (the locals must think that we gringos are a astrange bunch...!)

On the second day, after having slept in a 'salt hotel' (though the salt bed did have a normal mattress on it), we went to see a series of lakes, one of which is red due to the algae that live in it, or the minerals in the water (we're not quite sure which as the guide wasn't all that clued up, but it was an amazing sight in any case!). Adele was also very excited to see some flamigoes wading about, which I have seen once before when I was little. We also passed through some areas of strange rock formations, formed by erosion, and we had a good time clambering about on them!

On the last day we got up VERY early as we had 10 hours in the car ahead of us in order to get back to Uyuni- incredible to think that you can cross the Atlantic in less time, on the map it looks like we moved about half a millimetre... However we also had time to stop to see some geysers at dawn (see photo of Adele roasting her hands), and then take a dip in a thermal hot spring!

We're now in the city of Potosi- I won't say much about it apart from it's the highest city on Earth at 4060m above sea level (according to Lonely Planet) and it was once very important, and I'll save the rest for another post! Now I'm going to go to bed, love to you all!

Un abbraccio a tutti
