Hello everyone!
Ciao!
After our last blog we took a night bus and crossed the border into Bolivia early in the morning. We stopped in the first town, called Copacabana (apparently the more famous Copacabana in Brazil is named after the one here, rather than the other way round). The town is on the shore of Lake Titicaca, which is huge (over 200km long) and is the highest navigable lake in the world at nearly 4km above sea level. The lake itself is very pretty, which is more than can be said for Copacabana, where half the buildings are under construction (and appear to have been so for the last 20 years) and the other half are dark, musty hostels and overpriced tourist-trap restaurants (that said, there were some nice little shacks on the beach serving up fresh fish)
The second day we left the town behind and walked the 18km up to the nearby peninsular, where we paid a local man with a fairly decrepit boat across the straits to ´La Isla Del Sol´ (Sun Island), which is the island where the Incas´ creation myth began. We found a nice little hostel there, and on the following day walked from the south to the north of the island- the views of the island and across the lake were very dramatic, with huge stormclouds threatening on the horizon all day (but we were lucky in the end, no rain!). When we returned to Copacabana that evening there was a huge festival/parade going on, involving dancing policeman and scary bear costumes.
The next day we took another bus to La Paz, the capital of Bolivia, and one of the highest capital cities in the world. Our first impression of it wasn´t very positive- we arrived in the pouring rain, and it isn´t a very pretty place. However, after we´d found a place to stay and the sun came out, we started to change our opinion of the place- if nothing else, the setting is very dramatic, with the whole city built on the slopes of a steep-sided canyon, with snow-capped mountains in the background. Another high point of La Paz has been the markets- some of them serving up local delicacies, such as empanadas and ´api´, a kind of thick, sweet, hot fruit drink, and one of them, known as ´the witches´ market´, selling products such as mummified llamas, which apparently bring good luck when buried underneath the threshold of a newly built house (!).
Last night we decided to go to the cinema here to see the new James Bond film, which we really liked, but that might just be because our viewing has been limited to poorly dubbed Jean Claude Van Damme films on rickety coaches for the last 4 months. In any case, it was an experience in itself- we were the only ones who didn´t arrive halfway through, people brought in whole hampers of food to munch through (noisily) during the film, despite the posters pointing out that this wasn´t allowed, children shouted and kicked rhythmically on chairs out of boredom, people not only had their mobiles on but actually answered calls, at length.
So, that´s our Bolivian experience up until now... It´s definitely a poorer place than Peru, but also less touristy, and we´re enjoying it! Hope all are well and that the mums enjoyed their time in Italy, and I would have liked to have gone to that cinema with Stu just to see his reaction!
Love Ross
Baci! Adele
