Settimana Mari e Monti=Surf and turf week

Ciao!
(It looks like Adele has written a fairly exhaustive account of our recent travels so I will limit myself to translating what she´s written... and for a bit of practice :)
Hello! We´re writing from an internet cafe in Pisco, unknown pearl of Peru´s south coast. It´s a horrible, dusty city, in the most squalid desert you can imagine, but it´s the closest place where we could find an internet cafe.

We spent about a week exploring the Cordillera Blanca, in the heart of the Peruvian Andes, before suddenly descending all of 4000m to sea level (I´m sure this can´t be good for you, but it can´t be worse than doing it the other way round...?), to the Paracas National Park. We spent a few days exploring Huaraz and its surroundings. We went to the ruins of Chavin, a citadel built by the Chavin culture; around 1000BC they were important priests and astronomers who predicted the future, performed magic and foresaw weather patterns with the help of the San Pedro, a cactus with halucinogenic properties. They also performed human sacrifices and the grand high priest was a deformed dwarf who never left the temple (NB Adele may have used a bit of poetic licence here). The ruin was a sort of hill with an amazing system of tunnels and rooms inside it, where the priests carried out all their rituals. We had a very nice guide, who said some strange things, for example that this civilization had disappeared because all of a sudden the stars moved and they were no longer able to predict the weather effectively, and he also strongly recommended stopping over at the ruins for a night and preparing oneself spiritually to take San Pedro and experience being transformed into a Jaguar. We didn´t.
Then we did a day long trek to Laguna 69, a high altitude glacial lake at the foot of a glacier whose name I can´t remember. We walked and walked through a very strange valleythat looked like the enchanted valley from the cartoon The Land Before Time, and at the end we reached an amazingly blue lake beneath an immense glacier... I´ve never seen such huge mountains! They´re enormous and majestic, almost frightening, especially because you know that there isn´t a helicopter to come and rescue you if something goes wrong! But apart from when I hilariously slipped over in the mud it all went well! On the way down we also came across a brilliant Andean market full of women in massive, colourful hats, and phosphorescent clothes! What a contrast with the dark, slightly sad clothes that the indigenous people wore in Cotopaxi!

The next day we were in the Paracas Natural Park, on the coast a few hundred kilometres from Lima (we refused to stop in Lima apart from to change bus... the taxi driver who took us to the other bus station had a metal cage around his seat for protection!). Yesterday we rented some bikes to explore the reserve, which is essentially a desert peninsular surrounded by very blue sea with beaches and Darwinian rocks (which in my imagination are flat and smooth, the perfect habitat for sealions, red beaked birds etc) and we found a small beach with calm waters and white sand where we were the only visitors for several glorious hours.Today we went on a boat tour to the Islas Ballestas, where there are sealions, Humboldt penguins, and the most amazing number of birds that you can imagine! I´ve never seen so many birds in one place! The islands are only used to harvest guano and use it as a fertilizer. Pelicans are disgustingly ugly birds with something prehistoric about them, we don´t like them much!
And maybe this evening Ross is going to take us out to eat some fish! Instead of cooking our dinner in the little hostel kitchen which we´ve been doing to save money.
Love Adele (And Ross!xxxxxxxx)
